Check your safe is (properly) certified - in 5 easy steps

Mark Brookes

Only by checking the certification label of a safe, can you tell if it has been officially graded. Here's what you should look for and where to find it, whether you are considering buying a safe or you already have one.

When a safe has been properly tested and certified, it is marked with a metal label inside the door.

Here is an example of a certification label you would find in a safe that has passed a resistance test. This one is blank and is used by the European Certification Body (ECB•S), but other certification bodies use similar certification plates containing the same information.

Checking the certification on your safe

If you are unsure as to whether your safe offers the right protection, follow these simple steps:

Step 1

Get hold of the certificate. All legitimate manufacturers and distributors will be able to provide you with a copy that will confirm the manufacturer, the model, available sizes, the test standard to which it has been tested and the level of protection it offers.

Step 2

Check the certificate against the data held on the certification body’s website. Whilst the certificates may or may not be held, each body will show a manufacturer, product and size listing by way of confirmation.

The ECB•S website, for example, hosts a list of certified products.

Step 3

Open the safe to view the label. Remember if there's no label there’s no certification.

Step 4

Check for the correct class or grade of resistance.

Step 5

Check that the certification number on the certificate matches the one on the label.
